Chapter twelve

Tatum

Strange dreams raid my sleep. Pain rips through my body. My hands are sticky, covered in blood. The smell of copper invades my nostrils. Everything fades into inky darkness until a gentle glow lightens the edges of my vision. A shape begins to form, growing and taking on the outline of a woman. Her vibrant curls flow around her face and shoulders like water, their hue the darkest shade of emerald, shot through with streaks of copper. She pauses in front of me and reaches out her hands. A melodic sound escapes her lips, faintly echoing against the stillness like a lullaby. Is this the djinn?

My awareness of where I am returns. I’m in Mal’s bed. Tears build in my eyes when I remember why. He’s sound asleep next to me, his chiseled features relaxed and his chest rising and falling in a peaceful rhythm. I run my hand over his shoulder; he stirs slightly but doesn’t wake. The sound of the rain coming down on the balcony draws my attention, and I slide out of bed to peer out the glass doors. Large drops bounce off the railing. With a heavy sigh, I turn away. Looking again at Mal’s sleeping form, I fight back the tears that threaten to fall. I love him, but I miss Jack. How could he erase my memory and not tell me? I grab a robe hanging on the back of the bedroom door, slip it on, and make my way into the living room.

My cell phone buzzes, and I find it in my purse. There’s a message from Gia, asking where I want to meet for lunch, and three messages from Jack. Jack’s messages are sweet, reminding me to take care of myself, that he loves me, and to take the time I need. I sink into the couch cushions, my heart aching. Tears flow down my cheeks. He gave his permission, but I can’t escape the guilt, the feeling I’ve been unfaithful by being with Mal. After a few minutes, I recompose myself and text Gia a lunch location, then I wonder if I can tell her about the wedding. Steadying my nerves, I call Jack.

“Hey,” he answers. “How are you doing?” The sound of his voice cuts through me. I loved being with Mal, but I miss my husband.

“I’m okay,” I say, trying not to sound distressed. “I have a question about the memory wipe thing. Can I talk to people about it? I mean like Gia or Ash.”

“Of course you can. I suspected their memories might return or that it might not work on any Magical Beings in the first place. Just remember that it is a traumatic memory, although more for you than anyone else.”

“Thanks. I’m having lunch with Gia and really need someone to talk to.”

He’s silent for a beat. “How’s Malcolm?”

Guilt creeps in again at the mention of Mal and the memory of how eager I was to be with him. “Sleeping. He told me everything last night, filled in all my memory gaps.
